Bonaire is not a large island, but if you go on a holiday it is still advisable to rent a car. With a car, you can easily drive everywhere and, of course, it is convenient for carrying your diving gear. If you plan on diving, it's wise to rent a pick-up truck. Exploring the Washington Slagbaai National Park with a car requires a jeep or pick-up truck. Along the way, of course you'll stop to get out and see the beautiful spots you come across.
It is definitely advisable to arrange the car rental at home beforehand so that you can be sure of getting the car of your choice and avoid any surprises in Bonaire. Below you will find a car rental company where you can reserve the rental car. We have had personally very good experiences with this car rental company, and we can recommend this company.
If you're on vacation in Bonaire you really need a rental car.
You need a driver's license and you must be at least 21 years old. You must have held your driver's license for at least one year. However, some car rental companies may have stricter requirements. The minimum age limit can vary from 21 to 25 years, and it is also possible that you need to have held your driver's license for two years before you can rent a car. When renting a car in Bonaire, having a credit card is very useful for the deposit.
If you're planning to rent a car on Bonaire a credit card is very useful for the security deposit. However, at AB Car Rental you don’t need to pay a deposit if you opt for a slightly more comprehensive package. In that case a credit card is not required.
Tip! Well-known car rental companies such as Budget, Hertz, and Avis have a presence in Bonaire, but there are also several local rental companies on the island. The local rental companies are reliable and often slightly cheaper than the well-known names. We have had good experiences with the local rental company AB Carrental.
The roads on Bonaire are not always well-maintained and can sometimes be in very poor condition. The island has both paved and unpaved roads. The unpaved roads, especially after heavy rainfall, can be challenging to navigate. If you plan to rent a car it’s advisable to consider beforehand whether you’ll be driving on unpaved roads. In that case a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. A 4x4 is essential if you plan to visit Washington Slagbaai National Park. If you’re involved in an accident, always contact the police so they can file a report.
Outside of Kralendijk the roads on Bonaire are pleasantly quiet. In fact, we’ve never seen a traffic jam outside of Kralendijk. However, in the capital city traffic can get quite busy. Keep in mind that on Bonaire wild goats, donkeys and other animals often wander onto the roads, so always be cautious and adjust your speed accordingly. Fun fact: there are no traffic lights on Bonaire!
Due to the popularity of diving on Bonaire many people drive pick-up trucks. The air tanks used for this sport can be safely transported this way. Additionally, a pick-up truck makes it much easier to explore Washington Slagbaai National Park.
A pick-up truck is incredibly convenient if you’re going diving.
In August 2018, the very first breathalyzer test in history took place on Bonaire. A total of 177 drivers were tested. Out of these 177 individuals, 24 had a blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit, and four drivers were even unable to do the breathalyzer test. If you are going on vacation to Bonaire, it is wise to abstain from consuming alcohol if you still have to drive. Of course, it is also much safer for everyone to refrain from drinking alcohol when participating in traffic.
