What Are the Rules?

Fishing with harpoons and nets is strictly prohibited on Bonaire. Additionally, fishing is not allowed at the dive sites of the coral island. It is also forbidden to fish in the harbors and within 20 meters of the shoreline in Kralendijk. Local fishermen on Bonaire do not use rods or nets. These skilled professionals practice line fishing, using lines to haul massive fish from the sea—a truly spectacular sight to witness.

The Bonaire International & Local Fishing Tournament is a two-day fishing competition on Bonaire. It is a 'catch & release' tournament, where the focus is on the total weight of randomly caught fish. The event includes an international competition with global anglers as well as a local competition featuring local fishermen. The tournament offers significant prizes, including cash rewards. To win the grand prize—a car—you'll need to catch a total of 1,023 pounds (the Antillean record). Around the Bonaire International & Local Fishing Tournament various events are organized such as BBQs and live performances by artists.
