Golfing on Bonaire

Golfing on Bonaire is of course a paradise-like experience, but golfers are put to the test on this Caribbean island due to the ever-present trade winds. Fortunately, the course has been designed with these conditions in mind. The noble game of golf can only be played on one course on the island: the Bonairean Golf Course Piedra So. The golf club has approximately 30 members. However, you don’t need to be a member to play. Anyone, including tourists, can purchase a green fee to showcase their skills on the 18-hole golf course.

Playing golf on Bonaire is fun but also challenging due to the wind and heat.

Bonairean Golf Course Piedra So

The Bonairean Golf Course Piedra So is a unique golf course. The total golf area covers approximately 200 acres and features 18 holes. It is an ecological golf course where you won’t find artificially created greens but rather browns. Due to Bonaire’s steppe climate, grass struggles to take root. Large cacti and other native plants serve as natural obstacles on this challenging course.

So, no manicured fairways and greens here—just pure nature. The golf club’s name, Piedra So, means "only stones" in Papiamentu, which is fitting given the rugged terrain. Golfing on Bonaire is becoming increasingly popular, with more people testing their skills on this Bonairean course.

Finding the golf course isn't easy. It is located south of Lagoen Hill on the east coast, deep in the kunuku (countryside/inland) of the diving island. However, signposts in this wilderness are scarce. The area where the golf course is situated is called Rooi Lamoenchi.

Chogogo Dive & Beach Resort Bonaire

During our 5th stay on Bonaire, we stayed at the Chogogo Dive and Beach Resort. The resort has a fantastic location right on the beach, allowing you to walk straight from your apartment to the sea for swimming or snorkeling. There's also a great pool and a Lazy River to float along and relax.We booked our stay with breakfast, and we never regretted it for a second. The breakfast was delicious, and every morning, hummingbirds flew around the restaurant. In the evenings, we dined at the restaurant or the beach bar—such a great atmosphere after a day of golfing!

Copa di Bandera

Every year on September 6, Bonaire Day is celebrated on Bonaire. On this day in 1499, the Spanish discovered Bonaire. Bonaire Day is also known as Flag Day. On this day, a golf tournament called the "Copa di Bandera" is held at the Bonairean Golf Course Piedra So. Non-members are also welcome to participate in this tournament. They are also invited to join other competitions organized by the club.

In recent years, the popularity of golf has skyrocketed, with dozens of new golf courses opening worldwide every day. During the four Majors, the most prestigious golf tournaments of the year, millions of people are glued to their screens. Golf is also gaining popularity in the Caribbean region. Islands like Aruba and Cuba are heavily investing in golf facilities. Bonaire has not been left out of the global golf craze, especially considering that the majority of tourists are Americans—a nation that has a deep love for golf.
