Washington Slagbaai National Park

The Washington Slagbaai National Park (WSNP) represents a large portion of Bonaire's flora and fauna and covers the entire northern tip of the island. The park features four diverse hiking trails for visitors: a climbing trail to the highest point of the island, a second climbing route (Kasikunda Climbing Trail), the shorter Oliba Trail at about 1 mile, and a flat walking route (Lagadishi Walking Trail).

Hiking Washington Slagbaai National Park BonaireSeveral hiking trails have been marked in Washington Slagbaai National Park.

Lagadishi Walking Trail

At the entrance of Washington Slagbaai National Park you’ll find an easy and flat walking trail. Follow the Lagadishi Walking Trail (marked with green arrows) for an engaging hike of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The trail takes you to the park’s rugged east coast, where you’ll discover the beautiful Playa Chikutu and the fascinating Suplado blowhole. Keep in mind that temperatures can rise significantly later in the day, making this activity less comfortable.

Kasikunde Climbing Trail

A second climbing route, the Kasikunde Climbing Trail, offers an adventurous hike to the top of a volcanic hill called Juwa Pas. In just about 30 minutes you'll reach the summit, where you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the island’s northern side. Along the way you’ll encounter stunning volcanic basalt formations, some covered in colorful lichen.

On the descent you’ll pass a spectacular viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of a large salt lake in the park (Saliña Matijs), the park entrance, the rugged east coast, the lighthouse ruins, and tens of thousands of cacti.

It’s important to know that the Kasikunde Climbing Trail is not an easy hike. The path is scattered with large rocks that you’ll have to climb over both on the way up and down. Sturdy hiking shoes and a good tolerance for heights are absolutely necessary for this challenging adventure.

The Brandaris

The Brandaris is the highest mountain on Bonaire, standing at 791 feet. This hill is located in Washington Slagbaai National Park (WSNP) and offers a great challenge for hikers. The Brandaris hiking route (marked with yellow arrows) takes approximately 180 minutes and leads you to the highest point of Bonaire. At the 791-foot summit you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Caribbean island. After 12:00 PM it is no longer possible or advisable to start the Brandaris hiking route.

The Oliba Trail

The Oliba Trail is a route of just under one mile. It takes about 45 minutes to complete. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Brandaris, the beach, a salt lake with flamingos, and more. If you prefer a shorter walk in the park, the Oliba Trail is a great option.

Kralendijk

A historic city walk through Kralendijk takes you past the main highlights of Bonaire’s capital, including pastel-colored colonial buildings, picturesque churches, monuments, and must-visit museums.

Rincon

On Bonaire there are only two small towns (villages): Kralendijk and Rincon. Rincon is the oldest settlement on the coral island and is located in the north, near the border of Washington Slagbaai National Park. It’s highly recommended to take a walk through the village. Additionally, near Rincon, you'll find a beautiful hiking trail: Rooi Sangu. This trail is marked with pink stones. Along the way, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views at certain points.

The Scenic Route Between Kralendijk and Goto Lake

On Bonaire’s west coast a scenic road runs between Kralendijk and Goto Lake. From the Caribbean Beach Club (a resort) to Landhuis Karpata (a historic mansion), a hiking trail runs parallel to this road. Unfortunately the trail is not well-maintained and can be challenging to navigate in some areas, but this only adds to the adventurous nature of the hike. While walking you’ll witness the stunning flora of this diver’s paradise and admire beautiful rock formations along the way.
