Kontiki Beach

Kontiki Beach is located on the southeastern coast of Bonaire, five miles southeast of the historic center of Kralendijk. It is also spelled as KonTiki Beach. Kontiki Beach is one of the three beaches of Lac Bay, a 1,730-acre lagoon. The other two beaches are Lac Cai Beach and Sorobon Beach. Kontiki Beach is situated on the southeastern side of Lac Bay, with Sorobon Beach on the southern shore of the enchanting coastal lake and Lac Cai Beach on the northeastern side of Lac Bay.

What Does Kontiki Beach Look Like?

Kontiki Beach features a mix of sand, crushed coral, and scattered greenery. Comfortable shaded spots are provided by several thatched-roof canopies, under which beach loungers are available. The view from Kontiki Beach over Lac Bay is absolutely breathtaking.

Lac Bay is invaluable to Bonaire. Not only is it one of the world’s top windsurfing locations, but it also harbors a coral barrier, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests. Kontiki Beach is a stunning sandy beach, yet it remains peaceful most of the time. We love coming here to soak in the tranquility and the beautiful view over Lac Bay.

Mangroves

A mangrove habitat is characterized by deciduous trees and shrub-like trees adapted to survive in salty inland waters influenced by tidal currents.

Mangrove forests (mangroves) have high ecological value and can be found in only a few locations on Bonaire, the most significant being Lac Bay and Pekelmeer. Three species of mangroves grow on Bonaire: red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), and white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa). The red mangrove is the most common species on the island. Mangrove areas also support the growth of sea purslane, saltwort, and krapéwiwiri. These forests are known for their high mosquito populations, which attract insect-loving bird species.

Mangroves serve crucial ecological functions. They protect the coastline from storms, hurricanes, and tsunamis. Additionally, they act as nurseries and growth areas for fish (gray snapper, rainbow parrotfish, barracuda, etc.) and crustaceans (Caribbean spiny lobster, etc.). Mangroves also capture nutrients and pollutants, helping to safeguard coral reefs and seagrass beds. Lastly, they are essential foraging grounds for birds (yellow warbler, green heron, etc.) and provide resting areas for species such as doves and parakeets.

The islands of the Caribbean archipelago consist of the Lesser Antilles and the Greater Antilles. In the Lesser Antilles, mangroves are found in 263 areas, covering a total of 51,002 acres. Two percent of this area (902 acres) is located on Bonaire. Over the past 25 years the mangrove area in the Lesser Antilles has declined by 41%. During that period the mangrove area on Bonaire has remained unchanged. However, the mangroves on this Dutch diving island are under pressure. Pollution, sedimentation and human disturbance are the main threats. Contaminated (ground)water eventually accumulates in the mangroves, causing significant damage. Land erosion, partly due to overgrazing, washes sediment, soil, and sand into the mangroves, leading to suffocating siltation. Increased recreational activity also disturbs birds that rest and forage in the mangroves of Lac Bay.
