Goto Lake (Gotomeer)

The Goto Lake (Saliña Goto, Saliña Grandi, Lagun Goto) in the northwest of Bonaire is the largest saliña (saltwater lake) on the Dutch diving island. The Goto Lake was formed when coral growth created a natural dam, isolating the lake’s water from the sea. The Goto Lake is located in the Washington Slagbaai National Park and serves as an important feeding and breeding ground for the majestic Caribbean flamingos.

Small islands

The Goto Lake is dotted with several small islands. The largest of these is called 'Falcon' and is privately owned by a family from Rincon, who cultivate corn and barley there.

Observation Point

From a high observation point you’ll find several benches offering a beautiful view of the lake. This vantage point also provides views of the small islands within the lake and, in the distance, the peak of the Brandaris (241 m). The Brandaris is the highest hill (mountain) on Bonaire. There is convenient parking available near the observation point.

Excavations

The area surrounding the Gotomeer is home to most of Bonaire's archaeological sites. Excavations are regularly conducted near the lake, uncovering remnants from a distant past.

Fire at BOPEC

Close to the Gotomeer lies the site of BOPEC (Bonaire Petroleum Corporation), an oil storage and transshipment company. BOPEC plays a significant role in Bonaire's economy, providing employment to many Bonairians.

However, the potential dangers of such facilities became evident on September 8, 2010, when a fire broke out in two oil storage tanks. Ultimately, 32 million liters of crude oil were lost in the blaze. Since then the color of the water in the Gotomeer has changed and sightings of Caribbean flamingos have significantly decreased.

The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has been conducting research into the environmental effects of the BOPEC fire on the Gotomeer. Among other things, the RIVM is investigating the presence of 'Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS)' in the soil, (ground)water, and sediment of the Gotomeer. PFOS is a compound found in firefighting foam. It is a hazardous substance that accumulates in the environment and is difficult to break down.

Oil Spill Response Plan

In 2012 Bonaire took its first steps toward improving its readiness for accidents involving large amounts of oil entering the environment. That year, a container equipped with oil spill response materials was introduced. This container includes protective clothing, hand tools (buckets, shovels, absorbent materials), and equipment for transporting oil-covered birds.

The first days following an oil spill are crucial for the flora and fauna. With the contents of the container, harbor masters, park rangers and other professionals can immediately respond to accidents involving significant oil pollution.

Since 2013, Bonaire has also been equipped with a 'current booster' and 'offshore oil containment booms.' Additionally agreements have been made with other (neighboring) countries to coordinate and cooperate effectively in the event of major oil incidents.
